Alfuzosin – Medicine Information

Alfuzosin

Also known as / Brand Names:

Generic Name: Alfuzosin
Brand Names: Uroxatral, Alfusin, Alfoo, Xatral

Product Introduction:

Alfuzosin is an alpha-blocker used to treat symptoms of an enlarged prostate, a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It works by relaxing the muscles in the bladder neck and prostate, making it easier to urinate and relieving symptoms like weak stream, frequent urination, and incomplete bladder emptying.

Unlike other alpha-blockers, Alfuzosin is often preferred due to its extended-release formulation that helps maintain steady blood levels throughout the day, improving comfort and compliance. However, it does not shrink the prostate or cure BPH — it only helps relieve the symptoms.

Uses of Alfuzosin:

  • Treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men
  • Helps in relieving urinary symptoms such as difficulty in urination, hesitancy, dribbling, and frequent urination

Benefits of Alfuzosin:

  • Improves urine flow by relaxing muscles in the prostate and bladder
  • Reduces urgency, frequency, and nocturia (night-time urination)
  • Improves quality of life in men with BPH
  • Extended-release form allows once-daily dosing

Side Effects of Alfuzosin:

  • Dizziness or light-headedness, especially when standing up
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Stomach pain or indigestion
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Low blood pressure (especially with other BP medications)
  • Rare: Irregular heartbeat, priapism (prolonged erection)
